Importing and Exporting Translations

Manage, export, and update translations for your forms to deliver localized form experiences.

Updated over 8 months ago

Formulayt's translation management capabilities enable enterprises to deliver localized form experiences while maintaining global governance. This guide explains how to export, manage and update translations across your form estate.

Importing and uploading translations

First, you need to find the Export Button in the top right of the Manage Translations screen. This will provide you with an excel sheet.

Translations export layout

Important: Do not change any values in columns A, B and row 1.

  • Column A Name is the label for the phrases.

  • Column B is the Default Value. If no translation exists for the active language, this default value will display.

  • Everything right of Column B contains translations organized by country and culture. For example, French Canadian appears as fr-ca.

For cultures, if a translation cell is empty, it will cascade toward the root language and then to default.

Updating the translations

  • You can delete full rows and columns (except columns A, B and row 1). The system will only update what is in the spreadsheet and will not delete translations where cells are blank. To delete a translation, use the main translation interface.

  • When ready to import, select File > Save as > Drop down > CSV UTF 8. This step is essential. Uploading the incorrect file type could result in corrupted characters.

  • Check your updates by going to manage translations and spot checking phrases, defaults and languages.

Here you can verify that the translation from the export sheet matches up with the relevant language.

Finally, push to live to publish your translations.

That's everything you need to know to add or update translations for your gates.

Important note about translation indexing

When creating or editing fields with user-facing text, this text must be indexed by the Formulayt platform before it appears in the translations area. To do this:

  1. Preview a gate and trigger the new/updated text to show within our admin area.

  2. For field labels, simply view the form.

  3. For picklist values set by a rule, trigger the rule.

  4. For validation/error messages, trigger the message to display.

For example, if you have a validator to prevent letters in a phone number field, type a letter into that field to index the error message. Translation indexing only runs in the Formulayt admin area, not on external pages.
