Setting Up Multi-Language Gate Groups

Multi-language Gate Groups allow you to serve different gate languages using a single embed code. This approach simplifies deployment and improves the user experience across multilingual websites.

Why Use Multi-Language Gate Groups?

Without a Multi-language Gate Group, each language version of a gate requires its own embed code.

Multi-language Gate Groups provide:

  • A single embed code for all languages

  • Automatic language switching

  • Easier gate management

  • Consistent user experiences across regions

Before You Start

Before creating a Multi-language Gate Group, you must first create a version of the gate for each language.

Step 1: Create Your Default Gate

Create your primary gate first.

This is usually your default language version, such as English.

For guidance on how to create a gate please see our article here

Step 2: Duplicate the Gate for Additional Languages

Duplicate your original gate for each additional language.

Example naming convention:

  • Contact Form

  • Contact Form (de)

  • Contact Form (fr)

Using clear naming helps manage multilingual gates more easily.

Step 3: Update the Form Language

For each duplicated gate:

  1. Open the gate settings

  2. Update the Form Language in the form settings

This ensures the correct language configuration is applied.

Step 4: Translate Gate Content

Update all user-facing messaging for each gate version.

This includes:

  • Intro messages

  • Thank-you messages

  • Additional content or instructions

You can update these in Message Settings.

Step 5: Save Each Gate

Save each translated gate before creating the language group.

Create the Multi-Language Gate Group

Once all language versions are ready, create the gate group.

Step 1: Create a Language Group

  1. Go to Gates > Create New > Language Group

  2. Enter a name for the group

Example: Contact Form - Multi-language

Step 2: Add Gates to the Correct Language

Assign each gate to its matching language.

Example:

  • English Gate → English

  • French Gate → French

  • German Gate → German

Important: If no gate matches the detected language, Formulayt tries the base language gate, if available, such as French for French-Swiss. If there is no base language available then Formulayt will use the default gate.

Language Detection Methods

Formulayt supports three methods for detecting language on your website.

To configure detection:

  1. Go to Setup > Settings > Multi-language Gate Groups

  2. Choose your preferred detection method

Browser Page Language

Browser Page Language detects language using the HTML page language setting.

Formulayt reads values from the page source, for example:

<HTML lang="en">

<HTML lang=”fr”>

<HTML lang=”de”>

The system automatically attempts to map language values.

You can also define explicit mappings manually.

Additional Notes

  • Add multiple mappings on separate lines

  • All values are case insensitive

Meta Tag Detection

Meta Tag detection uses meta tag values to determine which gate to display.

The system automatically attempts to map language values.

You can also define custom mappings manually.

Additional Notes

  • Add multiple mappings on separate lines

  • All values are case insensitive

Page URL Detection

Page URL detection selects the gate based on the webpage URL structure.

Mappings are matched only at the beginning of the URL.

You can optionally include your root domain

URL Mapping Rules

  • Values must start with / or https://

  • Use / for your root directory

Example Values

/fr-fr/

/en-us/

Additional Notes

  • Use / for the root directory

  • Add multiple mappings on separate lines

  • All values are case insensitive

Best Practices

Follow these recommendations when setting up multi-language gate groups:

  • Use consistent naming conventions

  • Ensure all translated gates are fully updated

  • Test language detection on live pages

  • Always configure a default language gate
