Configuring MAP Pre-pop Retry and Memory Settings

Control how often Formulayt looks up contact data in your marketing automation platform (MAP) and how long successful lookups are remembered.

Overview

Most Formulayt marketing automation platform (MAP) integrations include two settings that give you greater control over contact pre-population:

  • Pre-pop fail retry rate

  • Pre-pop success memory

Together, these settings control how Formulayt handles contact lookups for pre-population:

  • Pre-pop fail retry rate controls how often Formulayt retries a lookup when no contact record is found.

  • Pre-pop success memory controls how long Formulayt remembers a successfully retrieved contact record before requesting fresh data from your MAP.

These settings can help reduce unnecessary requests to your MAP while ensuring that contact data is refreshed at an appropriate frequency.

Note: These settings are separate from field browser memory. MAP pre-pop settings control how Formulayt retrieves and remembers contact data from your MAP, while field browser memory controls how long an individual field remembers a value in the user's browser.

Pre-pop Fail Retry Rate

The Pre-pop fail retry rate controls how often Formulayt retries an anonymous contact lookup when no matching contact record is found in your marketing automation platform.

For example, if a visitor arrives on your website but is not yet recognized by Eloqua, Formulayt will attempt to retrieve their contact record. If no record is found, this setting determines when another lookup should be attempted.

By default, this setting is configured to Every page load.

Available options

Every page load (default)

Formulayt performs a new contact lookup each time the user loads a page containing a gate.

This is useful if contacts may be created during the same browsing session, allowing pre-population to become available without waiting for a new session.

Once per session

Formulayt performs a single lookup during the user's browser session. If no contact is found, no further lookups are attempted until a new browser session begins.

This reduces unnecessary requests to your marketing automation platform.

Every set number of minutes

Formulayt retries on the next page load after the configured number of minutes has elapsed.

This option provides a balance between frequent lookups and reducing unnecessary requests.

Pre-pop Success Memory

The Pre-pop success memory setting controls how long Formulayt remembers a successfully retrieved contact record before requesting fresh data from your marketing automation platform.

Rather than performing a contact lookup every time a page loads, Formulayt can temporarily cache the successful lookup and reuse it until the configured time expires.

By default, this setting is configured to Once per session.

Available options

Every page load

Formulayt retrieves a fresh contact record whenever a page containing a gate is loaded.

This ensures the latest information is always used.

Once per session (default)

The contact record is retrieved once per browser session and reused for the remainder of that session.

For a set number of minutes

The retrieved contact record is remembered for the configured number of minutes, then refreshed on the next page load.

This provides a balance between performance and keeping contact information up to date.

Important: These settings control how long Formulayt remembers the retrieved contact record. Once a value has been used to pre-populate a visible field, that field may continue to remember the value according to its own browser memory timeout settings.

How pre-pop success memory differs from field browser memory

These settings operate at different levels:

  • Pre-pop success memory controls how long Formulayt remembers the contact data retrieved from your MAP before performing another MAP lookup.

  • Field browser memory controls how long an individual field remembers a value in the user's browser, whether that value was entered by the user or pre-populated.

For example, if Pre-pop success memory is set to 30 minutes, Formulayt can use the remembered MAP contact data for 30 minutes without making another lookup.

However, if a field also has browser memory enabled, that field may continue to use its previously stored value according to its own browser memory timeout settings.

As a result, refreshing the MAP contact data does not necessarily mean that the value displayed in an individual field will change. The field's own browser memory timeout settings may determine whether its previously stored value is used.

An Eloqua recipient ID, or PURL, appearing in the page URL will trigger another lookup, even if the Pre-pop success memory hasn’t yet expired.

In summary:

  • MAP pre-pop success memory determines when Formulayt requests fresh contact data from your MAP.

  • Field browser memory timeout determines when an individual field reuses a value stored in the user's browser.

Choosing the Right Settings

The most appropriate settings depend on how frequently your contact data changes and how often you want Formulayt to request updated information from your marketing automation platform.

Setting

Recommended when

Pre-pop fail retry rate: Every page load

Contact records may be created while visitors are actively browsing your website

Pre-pop fail retry rate: Once per session

Reducing lookup requests is the priority

Pre-pop fail retry rate: Every set number of minutes

You want periodic retries without checking on every page load

Pre-pop success memory: Every page load

Contact information changes frequently and should always be refreshed

Pre-pop success memory: Once per session

Contact information is unlikely to change during a user's visit

Pre-pop success memory: For a set number of minutes

You want a balance between fresh data and improved performance

When choosing these settings, consider both how likely contact data is to change during a visitor's session and how frequently you need Formulayt to check your MAP for updates.

Remember that field browser memory timeout is separate from these settings and may affect whether an individual field displays a previously stored value.

Summary

The new pre-pop settings give you greater control over how Formulayt interacts with your marketing automation platform.

  • Pre-pop fail retry rate controls how often Formulayt retries contact lookups when no matching record is found.

  • Pre-pop success memory controls how long a successful contact lookup is remembered before being refreshed.

  • Field browser memory is separate and controls how long an individual field remembers a value in the user's browser.

  • Refreshing the MAP contact data does not necessarily mean that a field's displayed value will change if that field has its own browser memory setting.

These settings can help improve performance, reduce unnecessary API requests, and ensure contact data is refreshed at intervals that suit your organization.
